Capstone – Project

20. Electric Vehicle Market Analysis

A Collaboration Between

Engagement Synopsis

Kem Krest wants to identify – and ultimately act upon – emerging trends and opportunities in the EV ecosystem in order to grow our business.

Students will work closely with the Kem Krest team and will adapt the areas of research to fully explore newly identified opportunities based on real-time learnings and insights.

We will also feature amazing, A-List outside guests that will (provide a nice break from the research and) help paint the picture of how Kem Krest will be leveraging your work to drive our strategic objectives. We are not doing this project for “window dressing” – you are going to be building the foundation for a real-world, executable strategy to help Kem Krest succeed in the EV space.

Specifically, we’re looking to you to research and share your insights on the following:

  • Aggregated (US market) EV production estimates for next 5 years, legacy OEMs, Tesla, startups, cars and light-duty trucks (i.e., up to the size of a UPS van)
  • Key supply chain differences and challenges vs. ICE vehicles
  • Battery technology explained; current and future
  • Battery handling, recycling, end-of-life explained
  • Charging infrastructure growth rates on EVs
  • Identify key metrics to actively track and build “cost/capability” curves

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will gain experience in prioritizing data into actionable intelligence.
  • Students will gain exposure to supply chain, aftersales and fulfillment solutions in the sustainable products sector.
  • Students may have the opportunity to learn directly about “cost/capability” curves from the top research professor in the field.

Key Milestones & Project Process

  • March 22, 2021 - 1: KICKOFF: Introduction to Kem Krest, EV Project Scope

Expected that team members will have researched Kem Krest as pre-work.

    Meeting objectives:

    • Introduce team members
    • Walk thru project timeline and activities/expectations
    • Review key events and objectives for the project and Q&A re: EV research

    Project Synopsis:

Kem Krest wants to identify emerging trends and opportunities in the EV ecosystem. Students will work closely with the Kem Krest team over the 4 days and will adapt the areas of research to fully explore newly identified opportunities based on real-time learnings and insights. Specifically, we’re looking to you to research and share your insights on the following:

    • Aggregated (US market) EV production estimates for next 5 years, legacy OEMs, Tesla, startups, cars and light-duty trucks (i.e., up to the size of a UPS van)
    • Key supply chain differences and challenges vs. ICE vehicles
    • Battery technology explained; current and future
    • Battery handling, recycling, end-of-life explained
    • Charging infrastructure growth rates on EVs
    • Identify key metrics to actively track and build “cost/capability” curves

    Suggested Deliverable:

    None

  • March 22, 2021 - March 22, 2021 - 2: Intro to "Cost Capability Curves" with Rebecca Homkes and Will Bunker

Kem Krest is thrilled to feature London School of Business lecturer Rebecca Homkes and founder of what became match.com, serial entrepreneur and SPAC Jedi Will Bunker during this project. They will introduce their framework used to evaluate and track market trends that leverages ‘cost/capability curves’. These curves enable companies to track key metrics and to act on opportunities at the right time.

The project team’s work will be foundational in helping Kem Krest to identify those key metrics, which will ultimately feed development of Kem Krest’s cost/capability curves for the EV market, and to help drive the overall corporate strategy for success in the EV space.

  • March 23, 2021 - 3: Data Gathering and Synthesis

Over the course of the project, team members will identify sets of data that help explain the EV landscape in the key areas mentioned in the project synopsis. Team members will collaborate to determine if the data is important, relevant (i.e., does it cover the US EV market for small and medium sized vehicles) and determine its importance to Kem Krest in particular.

Team members will work with the Kem Krest team to validate their findings, refine them, and continue to explore/synthesize/report out/repeat.

As the data is refined and prioritized, the team will start building their output deck, to be presented on Day 5.

  • March 25, 2021 - 4: Project Report to Kem Krest Executives

The project team will finish off their work by presenting a high-level overview of key metrics and potential implications to the Kem Krest executive team.

As the project winds down, the team will move from data gathering/analysis/synthesis/prioritization to preparing an output deck that will describe their prioritized findings, and touch on the implications for Kem Krest. Exact time TBD.
